STORYBOOKS COME ALIVE

Story telling and  reading books are  one of my greatest joys and assets as a teacher. I have always loved reading and writing stories and I am fortunate to have the ability to get lost in the story and become the character who I read. I thoroughly enjoy sharing my love, passion and excitement about reading with students so this art show was such a joy to complete. Bringing two of my favorite things together was an amazing reward.

BOOKS WE'VE EXPLORED

I love the book "Not A Box" because it encourages readers to use their imagination and invent all sorts of things that an ordinary box can become. Having experiences first hand many times as both a teacher and a mother the joy a box can bring to a child I loved sharing this story and providing students with boxes and supplies to bring their imagination to life. The results of this were unbelievable and below are a few favorites.

The Pigeon is one of my all time favorite characters in a book and I absolutely love to read it to students.   I discovered this book during a  Project/ Study on buses and I fell in love with this feisty little character who demonstrates a persuasive text and offers multiple opportunities to discuss feelings, manners and friendship.  This portion of the Art Show served as the culminating event to our  Study on buses.

Young children are often fascinated by Dinosaurs as is the scientist in me. I loved exploring the "How do Dinosaurs" series and learning more about Dinosaurs as we recreated them for this display.  For this display children were introduced to paper mache and paper modeling as well as some collaborative dinosaurs created using a variety of materials and collaging.

As an artist their is none more inspiring than Eric Carle. An amazing storyteller and artist introducing his stories and his style of collage art was a phenomenal and exciting experience for preschoolers. I was so impressed how quickly they learned and enjoyed collage art.

"The Best Part of Me" was a fantastic book to explore to help students build up their self image and self confidence. It also allowed me  to add some digital art experiences to this show. I was excited to  introduce and share my love for technology with my students. For this class students first used a mirror to draw their portrait, then we talked about all their amazing features.  Students used cameras to take pictures of them selves and then decided on what they felt was the "Best Part of Me"   Students loved taking photographs and working on the computers.  It was a great opportunity to introduce the begin stages of editing pictures from photography to print.

One CANNOT have an art show about books and not include the father of all stories,  the one and only Dr. Seuss. Seuss.  Seuss is a fantastic subject to explore with students in literacy and in art. There is so much to learn while reading his stories and so much inspiration comes from them to create these  fantastic artistic representations.
