PHILOSOPHY

My goals as an Educator are to inspire creative freedom,  create good digital citizens, share my love and passion for literacy, instill a lifelong love of learning and foster a strong relationship between the family and the school. I am dedicated, compassionate, hard working, knowledgeable, eager to grow and determined to reach as many students and families as I can during my educational journey.

The quote above from Ben Franklin is the foundation of my Educational Philosophy. I believe a child's understanding of something  evolves through their experiences. This is why I am a proponent of  Project style learning theories where lessons are driven by children's interest. My ideas are strongly based on an Emergent Curriculum whereas learning experiences transpire from a child’s interests and life. I believe it is my job as a Teacher to facilitate learning and not act as a transmitter of information.

Each child is an individual and all children can learn and thrive in an environment that is stimulating, nurturing and accommodating to their unique talents and abilities.   I strive to get to know each of my students and families so I can provide the most differentiated and personalized learning experience for them.  I am a strong proponent of parental involvement in children’s education as it is clearly an influential factor to student’s academic success.

As an educator I  aim to establish a strong connection to my students and their families.  I have been successful in accomplishing this in my teaching.  I credit this to the fact that I consider and treat children as both capable and competent. I make sure they have rights in the classroom and that they are a part of their education choices as much as possible within the confines of the mandated curriculum. I  provide certain freedoms in the room to foster the feeling of confidence and independence. I strive to offer opportunities for learning and independence that show students that I have confidence in them, which inspires them to have confidence in themselves.  I want my students to feel comfortable, safe and free to express themselves in my classroom.

When children are exposed to the world, talked with often and given a variety of  opportunities to engage in interesting things, they soak up knowledge and become passionate about learning.  It is my commitment to motivate my students to become 21st century learners and thinkers. I want to help children understand that in this technological era, computers are tools and not just toys.   Students are taught to value and respect the ideas of their peers as they work together in class.

Throughout my teaching career, I have been passionate about three things: inspiring a love of learning in all of my students and creating thinkers,   connecting to families and helping both students and families navigate this technological era. I feel very strongly that in today’s ever changing world, students need to be prepared and have the skills and knowledge to integrate and access technology, work cooperatively with others, utilize problem solving techniques effectively and use creativity and critical thinking skills in order to become successful members of our global society.
